Pāʻina Pani Kau

Tonight was the pāʻina pani kau (end of semester party) for Ka Haka ʻUla ʻo Keʻelikōlani, the UH Hilo Hawaiian language college, as well as the ʻohana of the Hawaiian immersion school Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu. Different classes and organizations shared songs, hula, chants and skits. There were so many people! Packed to the max with limited parking. Good thing I asked my angels to save me a spot nearby!

Some of the classes included a papa ʻauana (modern hula class), Family Systems of Kaʻū class which looks at cultural practices (the class is based off of the book with the same title by Pukui),

Hawaiian language 101 classes and more. I had taken video of a real nice hula on my phone, but the file was too big to send to my email! Any suggestions?

The food included cooked taro, cooked 'ulu, poi (which was all gone before I even got to it), chicken, kālua pig, goodies & desserts.

Hope you like this little taste of Hawaiʻi! Enjoy the pictures. Aloha.
